Welcome to New London, home of Wheeling City Tours

Whether you are new to the area or have lived here all your life, you'll see the City with new eyes when you see it from a Segway! Tour leaders narrate the tour using an audio device which allows you to listen hands-free and enjoy the sights at the same time. A tour of downtown New London, the waterfront and Fort Trumbull ($60)

We'll glide around Waterfront Park, Downtown New London and Fort Trumbull, enjoying views of New London, Groton, the Thames River and Long Island Sound. You'll learn a little bit about New London's history and architecture, get some local tips on where to eat, drink and shop, and have a whole lot of fun!

Beaches, lighthouses and the Pequot Colony ($65)

We’ll glide along New London’s beaches, through Ocean Beach Park along the boardwalk and nature trail, and past New London Harbor Light, Connecticut’s oldest and tallest lighthouse. This tour starts at Mitchell College.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is a Segway?

A Segway is a two-wheeled, self-balancing, battery-powered electric vehicle invented by Dean Kamen. The name Segway is a homophone of the word segue, meaning smooth transition. Computers, gyroscopic sensors and motors keep the Segway upright. You command the Segway to go forward by leaning forward, and backward by leaning backward. To turn, simply press the handlebar to the left or the right. Movement is so smooth and intutive that we call it gliding.

Are there age or weight requirements to ride a Segway?

You must be at least 14 years of age and weigh between 100 and 260 lbs. All guests under 18 must be accompainied on the tour by a parent or guardian. No exceptions!

Where are you located?

Our address is 36R Bank Street. The "R" stands for rear, because our entrance is actually on South Water Street, opening onto the municipal parking lot. We are across from the Amtrak train station, next to Muddy Waters Cafe and under The Old Roadhouse.

Do I need a reservation?

Yes! Our entire regular season calendar is online and that is the best and easiest way to book. Online booking is available up to 22 hours in advance of the tour time. If you are interested in a private or custom tour, call us or send us an email.

Can I book at the last minute (within 22 hours of the tour time)?

Maybe :) Online booking closes 22 hours in advance of the tour, but there may still be space available. Call us at (877) 474-1117 and if there is space, we'll get you gliding!

What should I wear?

Wear clothes that match the weather, nothing too loose or hanging. Choose sensible shoes; the more support your shoes have, the happier your feet will be. Sneakers or running shoes are highly recommended. No flip flops, no sandals, no high heels, no kidding!

What can I / should I bring?

Apply sunscreen, and bring sunglasses, but hats are not recommended since you must wear a helmet. You can bring your own bicycle helmet or use one of ours.

How about cameras, cell phones, etc.?

You are not allowed to use any type of electronic device while on the Segway. No texting, calling, photo taking, email. Nothing! Our tour leaders take photos for you while on tour which will all be available online, and are included in the price of the tour. Time permitting, tour leaders can also take pictures of you using your own phone or camera.

How long is the tour?

All tours are at least one hour from the beginning of the tour (after the training and paperwork are complete).

Should I come before the scheduled time?

There is no need to arrive before the time stated. Check-in and training time is built into the schedule. For example, if your one hour tour is scheduled for 10:00 am, you should arrive by 10:00. Check-in and training usually take between 30 and 45 minutes, and since the tour itself is a full one hour long, you will be out on your Segway Adventure until between 11:30 and 11:45 am.

If I no longer want to go on the tour, will I still be charged?

Yes, unless you cancel more than 48 hours in advance. We schedule our tour leaders based on your reservation. Whether you change your mind due to weather, or because your plans have changed, you are still resposible for your reservation and will be charged the full amount due. To make any changes to your reservation, including cancellation, please contact us more than 48 hours prior to your tour date to avoid any charges.

What about the weather?

We glide rain or shine! Segways run well in all weather, and our tours go out in bright sunshine, light rain, or fog. In the case of heavy rain, we will work with you to reschedule, based on availability.

Will every tour get to all of the landmarks listed on your site?

From time to time, due to circumstances beyond our control, we may be unable to access a particular landmark along our usual tour routes. For example, we may be blocked by construction, unusually dense traffic, an accident, or a special event. When these things happen, we do our best to reroute the tour to keep it interesting and fun. Lucky for us, New London has abundant history and many cool things to see, so no matter what, you will have fun on your glide around New London! In rare circumstances, the speed of a tour could be so slow that we will be unable to get to some sights within the allotted time. Due to our schedule, and the battery life of the Segways, we may be unable to extend such a tour beyond the one hour.

If I feel I am not physically fit enough to ride, should I still book a reservation?

If you cannot commit to the 48 hour cancellation policy, we do not suggest you book a reservation. Once a reservation is booked, you are subject to our 48 hour cancellation policy.

Is it OK to take a tour if I am pregnant?

Segway riding is not recommended for pregnant women. Unfortunately, pregnant guests will not be permitted to participate due to fall risk.

How many people can ride together?

A single tour leader can take a maximum of seven (7) people at a time. However some tours may have a smaller size limit, or may have some spaces already taken. The online booking system will show the number of available spots for each tour date/time.

Where can I park?

There is a small municipal lot with free parking right outside the shop, as well as free on street parking on South Water Street. Alternatively, the Water Street Garage is just a block away.

Can I get to you by public transportation?

Sure! Come by train, bus or ferry! We're right across the street from Amtrak's NLC station and on all SEAT bus routes at the "Water Street" stop. Ferries to/from Block Island, Fishers Island and Long Island are all nearby.

Can I rent a Segway without going on a tour?

We do not rent Segways. All of our tours include a tour leader and narration. Book a tour - it's fun!

Are gratuities included in the tour price?

No, gratuities are not included as we want to keep the tours affordable for as many guests as possible. Gratuities are completely at the discretion of the guest. If you think your tour leader did a fantastic job and want to give her/him a tip, great! It will be much appreciated.
